SeSeeking health and beauty amongst the springs of the Beskid Mountains
2014-09-16

Who has not heard of Beskid Mountain mineral water? Here, in Beskid Sądecki and Beskid Niski, springs hidden in the mountains can be found at every step. These may be springs of normal, brisk mountain water, or naturally carbonated mineral water gently stinging your tongue. Such mineral water is usually so-called “szczawa” – that is, sources of water naturally saturated with carbon dioxide of volcanic origin, which makes various minerals located deep underground in the rocks dissolve. Thus, it gains a unique flavour and medicinal properties used to heal many ailments and diseases.

Thanks to the abundance of mineral water in Nowy Sącz and Gorlice counties, six health resorts were established here. They include both small ones, such as Wapienne situated amidst gently rolling countryside on the edge of Beskid Niski, and famous ones known in our country, such as Krynica-Zdrój hidden in the deep Beskid Sądecki Valley. The latter offers a unique variety of mineral springs where you can enjoy curative stays undergoing different therapeutic and rehabilitation treatments. Mineral water is used for drinking cures and in medicinal baths. The offer includes also mud treatments and many, many others. However, people visiting Krynica-Zdrój are not only the sick – it is worth coming here also to have a healthy rest and enjoy mineral water properties purifying and beneficial to your body.

Other regional health resorts, though less known than Krynica, are still great places for those wishing to improve health or have an active and healthy rest. Near Krynica, by the Poprad River, Muszyna – an old health resort of the State of Muszyna, is located. However, a small health resort of Żegiestów-Zdrój, is situated in the most beautiful bend of the river valley. Going further downstream, we will get to Piwniczna-Zdrój – a small health resort and an old town lying at the foot of the highest peaks of Beskid Sądecki. In turn, the wide Ropa Valley right on the border with Slovakia houses Wysowa-Zdroj – a quiet town located away from busy routes.

Of course, health resorts mean not only mineral water. They also offer modern water parks (in Piwniczna, Muszyna and Wysowa), promenades and pedestrian areas with outdoor gyms, numerous paths and trails for walking and cycling, horse-breeding farms and riding trails. In winter, a number of ski resorts open their doors; however, in summer, the highest mountain peaks, with Jaworzyna Krynicka in the first instance, can be easily accessed using ski tows and ski lifts.
