Traditions of local crafts and folk art
2014-09-16

Colourful folk art and products of local, traditional crafts are currently in vogue. Folk patterns are famous among fashion designers, art collectors look for original works and handmade craft products are esteemed by many people for not only their durability and quality, but – above all – uniqueness and ecological values.

The Sądecczyzna Region and the vicinity of Gorlice are regions known for cultivating local traditions. To this day, many enthusiasts and local community workers still sustain and nourish the patterns of local folk art, passing its tradition on to younger generations. Pogórzanie, Lachy Sądeckie, the highlanders of Beskid Sądecki, black highlanders, finally Lemkos – we can find differences in patterns, costumes, crafts, and – of course – traditional construction everywhere. Many folk artists still work in numerous localities. Among them, we can find artists whose works are known and appreciated both in the country and outside the territory of Poland. Paszyn, in which many sculptors still work, is a well-known centre of folk carving. However, many of their works can be admired at the local Museum of Folk Carving. Here, chisels are used to carve in wood, usually lime. Many other regional carvers were also bound up with Paszyn for a certain period of their artistic activity.

While carving is a profession of both men and women, embroidery is almost the exclusive domain of women. It is laborious work, requiring enormous skill and precision, consisting in creating not only fantastic multi-coloured folk costume decorations: heart-shaped patterns on highland trousers, ornaments on jackets and women's corsets. Embroidery also decorates tablecloths, doilies, tapestries and liturgical vestments, such as chasubles or stoles.

Lace-making is an equally difficult craft, demanding almost angelic patience. Bobowa is a famous centre of lace-making, more specifically – of one lace-making technique, i.e. bobbin lace. This is here where the world famous International Bobbin Lace Festival is held. All year round, light and delicate bobbin laces can be admired at the local Bobbin Lace Gallery, in which also the process of lace-making is presented.

Certainly, local folk culture is not only carving, embroidery and lace-making: local artists are also involved in glass painting, creating tissue paper decorations and wickerwork.
