On the vast grasslands of the Poprad Valley, below a slope, on which the houses of Stary Sącz emerge, Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass for about 500 thousand faithful on 16 June 1999, during which he canonised Bl. Kinga. To commemorate this event and to honour the Polish Pope, a wooden altar used during the memorable canonisation Mass was left standing on an artificial mound. At the altar, there is a small museum of memorabilia of St. John Paul II. The edifice of the John Paul II Diocesan Pilgrimage Centre stands nearby.
