The towering hill called Mount Cmentarna (367 m above sea level), which on the north dominates the centre of Gorlice, in May 1915 was the area of heavy fights. After the battle, it was decided to set up there the most important war cemetery in the Gorlice district. We enter the area of the necropolis, surrounded by a stone wall, through a monumental gate, resembling a triple triumphal arch – after all, it glorifies the victory of the Austro-Hungarian and German army over the Russians. The quiet area of the cemetery, shaded by old limes, is the burial place for more than 852 soldiers from all three armies fighting with each other.
